A few days ago, a poster of Maradona appeared in Sant'Anna di Palazzo, in the Spanish Quarters, in Naples. Nothing new, you might say, the alleys are teeming with representations of D10s. This time it's a mural by Stikki Peaches, a Canadian street artist, who had already worked in Naples - let's remember the poster of Sofia Loren in vico Zuroli, now torn down.
Stikki Peaches, originally from Montreal, Canada, debuted on the streets of his city, then continued with New York, Toronto, Stockholm, Berlin, Los Angeles, London. His works are not simple posters, but paste-up or collage pieces, using recycled materials.
His motto is "What if art ruled the world?", with which he hopes for the resolution of conflicts and disasters worldwide, precisely through a "government of art".
Stikki Peaches has brought icons from the world of entertainment, actors, footballers, and artists from the past into the alleys. He has integrated them into the urban fabric.
In Naples, he then chose to focus on two great icons of Neapolitan history. Some time ago, in fact, he created a portrait of Sofia Loren, in Forcella, in vico Zuroli. Unfortunately, that work was destroyed by the passage of time. In Sant'Anna di Palazzo, right next to the church, he created a portrait of Diego Armando Maradona, the most famous footballer in the world, who died on 11/25/2020. His face is enriched with some details, such as his date of birth (1960), written in Roman numerals, the date of the first championship won by Napoli (1986), a heart with the name of the footballer's wife, Claudia, and other things.
The mural is located between the entrance to the church of Sant'Anna di Palazzo and a car wash, below a sacred shrine.
The street artist is also currently working on another portrait of Sofia Loren, not far from the one of Maradona, as you can see on his Instagram profile.
